Outdoor Living, Room by Room

Kitchens, pergolas, ramadas, fire features and entertainment spaces that extend your home into the Arizona outdoors and work in every season.

Outdoor Living

Your Second Living Room

In Arizona the backyard is a second living room for much of the year. We design the structures that make it comfortable: shade overhead, a place to cook, somewhere warm to gather and a screen for the game.

We plan outdoor living the way an architect plans a house, in rooms. A dining room near the kitchen, a lounge facing the pool, a fire room for winter evenings and a play zone on the lawn. Each gets its own surface, shade and lighting, and the paths between them are as considered as hallways.

Shade drives most of it. A solid-roof ramada blocks summer sun and rain, a pergola filters light and can take a louvered or retractable cover, and orientation decides which side needs protection from the low western sun. Our guide to backyard shade in Arizona walks through the options.

Everything is designed with the pool and landscape, so the yard reads as one continuous environment rather than a collection of add-ons. Gas, power and water are planned before the deck is poured, which is what makes a kitchen, a fire table or a TV look built in.

Spaces We Build

Rooms Without Walls

01

Outdoor kitchens

Built-in grills, prep counters, refrigeration and bar seating under cover, laid out around how you cook.

02

Ramadas and pergolas

Solid roofs for full shade and rain cover, or open pergolas that filter light, sized to the furniture beneath them.

03

Fire features

Fire pits, linear fire tables and fireplaces that make cool desert evenings the best part of the year.

04

Lounges and seat walls

Built-in benches and seat walls that frame a fire or a view and give a party more places to land.

05

Entertainment

Weather-rated TVs, outdoor speakers and lighting scenes planned with the wiring, not strung up afterward.

06

Climate comfort

Misting systems, ceiling fans and heaters that stretch how many months you live outside.

Tell us how you host, and we will lay out the rooms on a design call.

Built for Arizona

Comfort in Every Season

Arizona outdoor living swings from scorching afternoons to chilly nights. The design has to handle both.

Summer sun

Shade where it matters

The low afternoon sun from the west is the hardest to block. Ramadas, screens and trees on that side, plus light-colored paving, keep a patio usable into the evening.

Winter nights

Fire and warmth

Desert evenings from late fall into early spring are made for fire. A fire pit or fireplace placed out of the wind turns the cool months into prime outdoor season.

Monsoon

Wind and water

Structures are engineered for monsoon gusts, and roofs drain away from seating and the pool. Fabric and furniture choices account for sudden storms and dust.

UV

Materials that last

Desert sun fades and cracks finishes that hold up elsewhere. We choose counters, cabinetry, fabrics and finishes suited to intense sun and heat.

The Process

Planning Outdoor Rooms Step by Step

Discovery and site visit

A 30-minute call about how you host, then a 60-minute visit to study sun, wind, views and utilities.

Design in 3D

Within a week you see every room, its shade, furniture and lighting in 3D, along with a full proposal.

Permits and utilities

Structures, gas and electrical are engineered and permitted, typically two to four weeks.

Build and finish

Footings, structures, utilities and finishes go in with the pool and landscape, coordinated by one team.

Outdoor Living FAQ

Questions About Outdoor Rooms

Should I choose a ramada or a pergola?

A ramada has a solid roof, so it gives full shade and keeps rain off furniture and electronics. A pergola filters light and feels more open, and it can take a louvered or retractable cover. Many yards use both: a ramada for the kitchen and TV, a pergola over a lounge.

Do outdoor living structures need permits?

Many do. Roofed structures, gas lines and electrical work typically need a city permit, and HOAs often review height, color and placement. We handle the drawings, engineering and submittals.

How do you keep an outdoor space cool in summer?

Shade first, then air movement, then water. Solid roofs and west-side screening block the worst sun, ceiling fans keep air moving, and misting cools the air in dry heat. Lighter paving stays cooler underfoot.

Can I put a TV outside in Arizona?

Yes, with the right setup. A weather-rated outdoor TV under a solid roof, out of direct sun and glare, holds up well. Power and signal lines are planned during construction so nothing is strung along the walls.

Can outdoor living be added after the pool is built?

Yes, though it is easiest when planned together so utilities run before decking is poured. If your pool is already in, we design around it and route gas and power with as little disruption to existing hardscape as possible.
